From Zero to SIA Badge: Your 4-Week Blueprint to a Security Career in Birmingham

Starting a security career in Birmingham does not require years of experience.

YOUR SIA LICENCE UNLOCKER

Before you book training, check these five points:

• You are aged 18 or over.
• You have the right to work in the UK.
• You can communicate in spoken and written English.
• You can provide suitable identity and address documents.
• You can complete the required first aid and SIA licence-linked training.

You must also pass the SIA’s suitability checks.

WEEK 1: CHOOSE YOUR SECURITY PATHWAY

The most common starting point for people entering the Birmingham security sector is the Door Supervisor licence.

A Door Supervisor licence can support work in:

WEEK 2: COMPLETE YOUR TRAINING

Your training week is where you build the knowledge and practical skills required for the qualification.

The Zems Academy Door Supervisor course covers four units.

UNIT 1: PRIVATE SECURITY INDUSTRY PRINCIPLES

You learn about the role of private security, legal responsibilities, professional conduct and the expectations placed on licensed security workers.

UNIT 2: DOOR SUPERVISION PRINCIPLES

This unit focuses on the duties of a door supervisor.

You learn about:

• Searching and entry procedures
• Dealing with incidents
• Refusing entry appropriately
• Monitoring customers and visitors
• Recording information
• Working within venue policies
• Supporting a safe environment

UNIT 3: CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

Security work requires calm and clear communication.

You practise how to:

UNIT 4: PHYSICAL INTERVENTION

This unit covers the safe application of physical intervention skills.

The focus is on prevention, control, safety and lawful practice.

You must attend the full programme and complete the required assessments. Arrive early, bring writing materials, and follow the training provider’s instructions.

FIRST AID REQUIREMENT

The SIA requires an appropriate first aid qualification before you start licence-linked training. The qualification must normally remain valid for at least 12 months from the start of your SIA course.

Zems Academy’s course information states that free Emergency First Aid at Work training is available as an additional day. Confirm the exact order of training when you book. Do not assume that completing first aid after the main course meets the current SIA requirement.

Bring evidence of your first aid qualification if you already have one.

WEEK 3: COMPLETE YOUR QUALIFICATION AND START YOUR SIA APPLICATION

After successful assessment, your awarding organisation notifies the SIA that you have achieved the relevant qualification.

The SIA must receive this notification before you can submit a front-line licence application.

Zems Academy states that course results are available within 10 working days. This is a training result timescale. It is not the same as the SIA licence decision timescale.

Once your qualification is confirmed, apply through the official SIA online service.

You will normally need to:

1. Create or access your SIA online account.
2. Select the correct front-line licence.
3. Complete the application form.
4. Provide identity information.
5. Provide address history.
6. Complete the required checks.
7. Attend the next-step appointment if requested.
8. Pay the current application fee.

The current SIA application fee is £204 for one licence. The fee is non-refundable.

All standard SIA licences last for three years, subject to the licence type and current rules.

Prepare your documents early.

DOCUMENT CHECKLIST

• Valid passport or accepted identity document
• Proof of address
• Address history
• Right-to-work information
• Passport-style photograph when requested
• First aid qualification
• Door Supervisor qualification details
• Information needed for criminal record checks
• Overseas criminal record evidence, if required

The SIA states that additional checks may be required if you have lived outside the UK for six continuous months or more during the last 10 years.

A criminal record does not automatically mean that you cannot apply. The SIA assesses each case against its licensing criteria. Check the official rules before paying your fee.

WEEK 4: BECOME JOB-READY

Training and licensing are essential, but employers also want people who can perform reliably at work.

Use week four to prepare for recruitment.

BUILD A SECURITY CV

Your CV should clearly show:

• SIA licence status
• Door Supervisor qualification
• Emergency First Aid at Work qualification
• Conflict management training
• Physical intervention training
• Availability
• Travel area
• Previous customer service or public-facing experience
• Any retail, hospitality, construction, warehouse or event experience

If your SIA application is still being processed, state this clearly. Do not claim that you hold an active licence until the SIA has granted it.

PREPARE FOR INTERVIEWS

Expect questions about:

• Managing an upset customer
• Responding to a suspected incident
• Refusing entry
• Working with colleagues
• Reporting concerns
• Following instructions
• Remaining professional under pressure

Use short examples.

Explain what happened, what action you took, and what the result was.
