Getting onto a construction site just got faster. As of 17 July 2026, the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) has updated the requirements for the Industry Placement card. This red card is designed for learners on formal qualifications like T Levels or apprenticeships.

The Big Change: 30 Days vs 3 Weeks
The most significant update on 17 July 2026 is the reduction in placement time. Previously, you needed to complete 30 days of work placement to qualify for the red Industry Placement card.
The new rule requires only a three-week construction industry placement. This change aligns CSCS cards with Department for Education standards for Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications. It means you can get your card and start your on-site training much sooner.

New Validity Rules for 2026
The CSCS Industry Placement card is now valid for 2 years. Previously, these cards lasted for 3 years. This change ensures the card stays active only for the duration of your qualification.
It is important to remember that this card is non-renewable. Once your 2-year term ends, you are expected to have completed your qualification and moved on to a skilled card, such as a Blue Skilled Worker card or a Gold Advanced Craft card.
Expanded Health and Safety Requirements
To get any CSCS card, you must prove you understand site safety. The 17 July 2026 update has expanded the types of evidence you can provide. You no longer strictly need the CITB HS&E test if you have other recognized qualifications.
You can now provide one of the following (taken within the last 2 years):
- CITB Health, Safety and Environment test (Operative) : A standard pass certificate.
- One-day Construction Health and Safety Awareness course : A completion certificate from an approved provider.
- Certificate of Unit Credit : Showing you completed a Construction Health and Safety unit as part of your main qualification.

Important: EUSR Changes October 2026
Be aware that the industry is constantly shifting. New EUSR (Energy & Utility Skills Register) changes are coming in October 2026. These changes will affect how utility and energy site workers verify their safety training.
Currently, EUSR cards are not accepted as a substitute for the Industry Placement card's health and safety evidence. If you are planning a placement in late 2026, ensure you meet the specific CSCS H&S requirements listed above. Do not rely on EUSR/SHEA cards alone for a CSCS application.
