The New CSCS Reality: February 2025 Update
As of 1 February 2025, the rules for the cscs green card (Labourer Card) have officially changed. The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) has introduced these updates to ensure site workers are active and competent.
Initial Validity Change
New applicants now receive a card valid for only 2 years. Previously, these cards lasted for 5 years. This change is designed to encourage career progression and verify that workers are genuinely employed in labouring roles.
The 5-Year Renewal Rule
To upgrade to a 5-year card after your initial 2-year period, you must provide proof of employment. You will need a signed declaration from your employer or a main contractor confirming you are working as a labourer.
The CSCS Trainee Card
For those holding a Level 2 qualification that does not yet prove full competence, a new CSCS Trainee card pathway opened in February 2025. This allows you to gain site experience while working toward full certification.

What are 'V Levels'? (Launching September 2027)
Starting in September 2027, the government is introducing V Levels. These are new vocational qualifications designed to replace several existing BTEC courses.
- Subject Areas: The first V Levels will cover Construction (On-site Trades) and Construction (Finishing Trades).
- Study Time: Each V Level involves 360 guided learning hours over 2 years.
- Equivalence: One V Level is equivalent to 1 A Level.
- Flexibility: V Levels can be mixed with other qualifications to build a custom career path.
While the cscs green card is a site access card proving basic safety knowledge, a V Level is a full vocational qualification. In the future, holding a V Level will likely be a primary route to securing higher-level CSCS cards.

July 2026: New Apprenticeship Competency Assessments
The Building Safety Act is driving a massive push for higher standards across all construction roles. By July 2026, new apprenticeship competency assessments will be fully integrated with CSCS card requirements.
These assessments will feature 3 risk levels. Depending on your role: whether you are a general labourer or a specialist operative: your assessment will vary in depth. The goal is to ensure that every worker has the specific skills, knowledge, and experience required for their specific site tasks.
This push for competency is also why Grandfather Rights (Industry Accreditation) have been withdrawn. All workers must now prove their skills through accredited qualifications rather than just time served.

Traffic Marshal and Banksman Training
