Stop Wearing Your Licence Back-to-Front! (And Other Mistakes That Could Get You Fined)
The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has issued a fresh warning to all front-line operatives in the UK.
If you wear your SIA licence card back-to-front, you are breaking the law.
This simple mistake is now a major focus for SIA inspectors during site visits.
Failure to display the front of your card is a breach of licence conditions under the Private Security Industry Act 2001.
It can lead to warnings, fines, and the loss of your professional career.
At Zems Academy, we want you to stay working and stay legal.
Follow this guide to avoid the most common mistakes that could get you fined.
The "Back-to-Front" Breach: What You Need to Know
Many security guards and door supervisors wear their licences with the blank side facing out.
Some do this for privacy; others do it simply because the card flipped over in its holder.
The SIA is clear: this is not acceptable.
Your licence card must show your photo, name, and licence number at all times.
The public needs to see who is protecting them to feel safe and confident.
If an inspector or a member of the public cannot see your face and details on the card, you are "not displaying" it.
Why Visibility Matters
- Public Safety: People need to know you are vetted and qualified.
- Identification: The photo proves the person wearing the card is the person licensed.
- Legal Duty: Section 9 of the Private Security Industry Act 2001 requires clear display.

Mistake #2: Forgetting to Update Your Address
Your SIA licence is tied to your home address.
If you move house, you must update the SIA via your online portal immediately.
Failing to do so is a breach of your licence conditions.
The SIA needs to be able to contact you regarding renewals and legal updates.
Many operatives forget this small detail and find themselves in trouble during a routine check.
Update your details today to keep your licence valid.
Mistake #3: Not Reporting Lost or Stolen Cards
If your licence card is lost or stolen, you must report it to the SIA and the police immediately.
You cannot simply work without it and hope for the best.
The SIA allows a small window of time to work while a replacement is processed, but only if you have reported the loss.
If you are caught working without a card and have not reported it, you face a criminal conviction.
Report your card lost or stolen through the SIA portal immediately.

Mistake #4: Sharing Your SIA Portal Login
Never share your SIA account username or password with anyone.
This includes your boss, your colleagues, or your recruitment agency.
Your portal contains sensitive personal data and your criminal record history.
If someone else has your login, they can make changes to your licence or even cancel your application without your knowledge.
The SIA has stated that there is no reason for an employer to ever ask for your password.
Employers should use the official "Licence Management" tools provided by the SIA instead.
Keep your login details private to protect your career.
Mistake #5: Misunderstanding "Licence Integration"
Do you know exactly what your licence allows you to do?
Many guards believe a Security Guard licence allows them to work at a pub or nightclub. It does not.
- Door Supervisor Licence: Allows you to work as a Security Guard and a CCTV operator.
- Security Guard Licence: Does NOT allow you to work at licensed premises (alcohol).
- Close Protection Licence: Allows you to work as a Door Supervisor and a Security Guard.
Working in a role you are not licensed for is the same as working with no licence at all.
This mistake often results in immediate removal from the site and a heavy fine for you and your employer.

Mistake #6: Missing the 2026 Refresher Training Deadline
As of April 2026, the rules for renewals have changed.
You can no longer renew your licence without completing a "Top Up" or "Refresher" course.
This applies to Door Supervisors, Security Guards, and now Close Protection operatives.
Your licence will not renew automatically.
You must book your training at least 4 months before your current licence expires.
If you let your licence expire, you must start the entire application process from scratch.
Book Your Door Supervisor Refresher now to avoid losing your licence.
The Real Consequences of Licence Mistakes
The SIA takes these rules seriously because they are about public safety.
If you are found in breach of the Private Security Industry Act 2001, the penalties are severe:
- Unlimited Fines: In England and Wales, the court can issue an unlimited fine.
- Prison Time: You could face up to 6 months in prison for serious or repeated breaches.
- Licence Revocation: The SIA will take your licence away, and you will be banned from the industry.
- Criminal Record: A conviction will show up on your DBS check, making it hard to find any future work.
Don't risk your livelihood for the sake of a simple address update or a flipped-over card.
